Meet Our Team
Dr. Michael Akins,
Together with his wife, Dr. Karolyn Akins, Michael Akins owns and operates All Creatures Animal Hospital. His passion for taking care of animals took root long ago—Dr. Akins essentially grew up at the Cincinnati Zoo, where he got to know many types of animals and developed a profound interest in exotics; this also happens to be where he met Karolyn!
Dr. Akins’ veterinary education began at Northern Kentucky University, where he earned a BS in biology in 1981, followed a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 1986. He also completed a small animal medical and surgical externship at Tuskegee in 1987. Dr. Akins has a special interest in exotic animal medicine, as well as veterinary dentistry and surgery.
Here at All Creatures, Dr. Akins enjoys working with and educating positive, motivated team members and students who share his passion for helping animals. Observing the strong bond that owners share with their pets and knowing he helps facilitate that is what keeps him coming back to work.
Dr. Akins shares his home with his wife and business partner Dr. Karolyn Akins, and their two sons Matthew and Allen. By most accounts, they have too many pets: three dogs, two horses, three birds, and eight cats.
Dr. Karolyn Akins,
Dr. Karolyn Akins has owned and operated All Creatures Animal Hospital with her husband, Dr. Michael Akins, for over 20 years. Always passionate about the science of veterinary medicine, Dr. Akins received her BS in Animal and Dairy Science from Auburn University and her DVM degree from Tuskegee University. She has also completed externships at Zoo Atlanta, the University of Tennessee, Pet Farms of Miami, and the Knoxville Zoo.
Her entire life, Dr. Akins fascinated by animals of every shape and size. She has volunteered at both small and large animal clinics over the years, and also spent time in the employ of Auburn University’s Pathology Department and the Cincinnati Zoo, where she met Dr. Michael.
In her day-to-day here at All Creatures, Dr. Akins loves to help owners better understand their pet’s health and make the most of the bond they share together. When a pet is sick or in pain there is nothing more rewarding than diagnosing the problem and helping an animal get better again. Dr. Akins takes great joy in getting to know her clients and their animals, so when you bring your pet in for a visit be sure to come along with plenty of questions!
Robin Samdperil has always worked in medicine in one way or another. With board certification in medical technology from Philadelphia Hospital and an early background in oncologic hematology (the study of blood cells in patients with leukemia and cancer), Robin moved through the medical industry to surgical instrument manufacturing and worked in dentistry for 16 years before finally finding her way—quite serendipitously—to All Creatures Animal Hospital.
One day she experienced a traumatic event with her cat. After rushing in to All Creatures Animal Hospital (where she was a client) for emergency treatment, she was immediately inspired by how caring the entire staff was for her and her feline friend. The whole experience got her thinking: Wouldn’t it be a blast to work in animal medicine? After sending her resume in on a lark, she was hired!
As Hospital Manager Robin is responsible for making sure things run smoothly in our busy office each day. She loves her team, the animals they see, and the unique challenges posed by her responsibilities to the staff, the doctors, and the business needs of the hospital. Robin has been married for 37 years, has 2 children—Jamie and David—5 grandchildren, and 2 cats.
