Your Best Pet: Behavioral Consultations
Your pet’s behavior is, in many ways, key to his or her acceptance by society. How your pet interacts with others, both at home and out in the world, is an important part of how he or she is perceived, not to mention how you are regarded as a pet owner.
But what happens when, seemingly overnight and without warning, your sweet pet begins acting out? While it may seem that your pet’s shifting behavior has “no reason,” the reason is often linked to changes in his or her overall health and wellbeing.
For this reason, we encourage you to not chastise your pet too harshly for any sudden changes in behavior and to contact us immediately if your pet experiences a rapid and unexplained shift in his or her typical behavior.
If your pet has begun to display the following unexplained behaviors, it could be a sign that he or she is not feeling well:
- Urinating or defecating indoors, despite being housebroken
- Sensitivity to touch or movement
- Lack of interest in favorite activities or toys
- Not coming when called or ignoring basic commands
- Loss of balance
- Easily startled
- Changes in appetite and water consumption
- Acting restless
- Excessive sleeping
- Uncharacteristic aggression
And remember, animals in pain often bite. If your pet nips or becomes aggressive for no apparent reason, he or she is likely experiencing pain that can’t be expressed in any other way.
We Can Help
If your pet’s behavior has undergone a recent shift, please call us for a behavioral consultation. We can help determine the root cause of your pet’s behaviors, and will work with you to address the issue, whatever it may be.
If it is determined that your pet’s behavior is not rooted in a health concern, we will refer you to a behavior specialist to work on identifying the cause and correcting the issue.
And please, be patient and compassionate with your pet.
